GUYMON WHEAT

Guymon is a hard white winter wheat released by the Oklahoma Agriculture Experiment Station in 2005.  The variety is an exclusive release to Oklahoma Genetics, Inc.

Guymon is the result of an intra-class hybridization of Intrada (Rio Blanco/Tam 200) and Platte (N84-1104/Abilene).

Guymon is a moderately tall semi-dwarf wheat (about 2 in. taller than Intrada) and intermediate to moderately late for heading (about 2 days later than Intrada and Trego).  It is moderately susceptible to low pH soils.  This condition is not expected to influence acceptance in the recommended area of adaptation - northwest Oklahoma.

This variety is resistant to leaf rust, stripe rust, stem rust, and wheat soilborne mosaic.  It is moderately susceptible to barley yellow dwarf virus, tan spot, and powdery mildew.  Guymon is susceptible to septoria leaf blotch and fusarium head blight (scab).  It is also susceptible to prevalent biotypes of greenbugs and to biotypes 1 and 2 of Russian wheat aphid.

Guymon tends towards a small kernel size like Intrada but high test weight.  It showed an above average protein content in both wheat and flour tests.  Baking scores placed Guymon in the above average category with excellent loaf volume.

Guymon's area of adaptation is in an area west of line from Buffalo to Sweetwater, OK and recommended for dryland or irrigated production.  Guymon has slightly lower early vigor ratings than Intrada (whose early vigor rating is excellent).  Forage accumulation is similar to Intrada and OK101 and is also similar in fall and early winter growth habit (semi-erect to erect).  Guymon has acceptable characteristics for wheat pasture utilization in a dual-purpose system.
