TIFTON 44 BERMUDAGRASS

Tifton 44 is a fine stemmed F1 hybrid bermudagrass that was developed for the Georgia-South Carolina Area, Agricultural Research Service, USDA and Georgia Coastal Plains Station and released in 1978.

Compared to Coastal, Tifton 44 is darker green, has finer stems, has more rhizomes, is a little shorter, and makes a dense sod.  It starts growth earlier in the spring than most bermudagrasses tested at Tifton, Georgia.  Tifton 44 is more resistant to foliar diseases than Midland.  It has survived winters well in Oklahoma and reportedly has a much winterhardiness and can be grown as far north as Midland.  In tests conducted in Georgia, Tifton 44 produced more forage and was more digestible than Coastal or Midland.
