Pronto was developed by the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 1980. The variety was developed from a selection made from the F3 generation of a cross between Chico and Comet. Its greatest advantage over other varieties is derived from its ability to yield relatively well and to grade high when grown in short seasons and limited soil moisture. Its earliness should give farmers greater flexibility in planting and/or harvesting dates and permit double cropping with winter crops such as wheat.
Pronto plants are of typical Spanish type but are slightly smaller in size. Seed size is somewhat larger and more desirable than other Spanish cultivars currently grown in the Southwest. It has very good shelling properties. Pronto carries no known genetic resistance to the typical disease and pests that generally attack peanuts, although it has not specifically been screened for pest resistance.
