At a recent meeting in Oklahoma City, the OCIA board of directors voted to make a change in the certification of wheat varieties containing the Clearfield technology gene.

The stewardship agreement that is signed by growers planting Clearfield varieties (Okfield, Centerfield, AP502CL) states that a sample of each crop produced must be submitted to the designated BASF laboratory to be tested for the Clearfield trait.  OCIA has not been requiring documentation to confirm the sample has passed the test before issuing certificates and certification tags.  Without documentation there is no way of OCIA knowing with any certainty that the crop produced does contain the trait at the level required by BASF.  Therefore, beginning with the 2011 crop, documentation will be required to show a sample has passed the Clearfield trait test before final certificates will be issued and certification tags will be printed.

OCIA suggest two samples should be taken after harvest.  One sample should be submitted in the OCIA bags for purity and germination testing.  The second sample should be submitted to the BASF designated laboratory for the trait testing.  Once you have the results from the BASF lab, please forward them to the OCIA office.  Results of the trait test must be received in the OCIA office before certificates and tags will be issued.

If you have any questions, please call the OCIA office.
